Not necessarily. Heat pumps deliver air cooler than a gas furnace does, so a supply temperature in the high 80s or low 90s can be entirely normal. It is a genuine fault when the air is at or below room temperature, when auxiliary heat runs constantly, or when the outdoor unit ices over and never clears through a defrost cycle.

It matters more here than people expect, precisely because the system runs so little. Ten months of sitting idle is when igniters corrode, capacitors weaken and rodents get into wiring — problems you discover on the first genuinely cold night, when every contractor in Acadiana is already booked. The most common cause is harmless: dust burning off the heat exchanger on the first run of the season, and it should clear within an hour.
